Trash to Treasure | DIY under $20

Have a vision and a budget???

A little time and energy and you’ve got a great DIY project!!!!
DIY Chalk Paint Chair Makeover

What you need to get started….

*Junk Chair

*Chalk Paint (We chose this one.  We actually bought it from JoAnn Fabrics on a 50% off sale!)

*Brushes (If you don’t already have some, these are great for starting out with chalk paint.  We had some brushes already.)

*Wax Paint (Depending on the look you want, you can use clear, white, or dark wax.  We used clear.  White gives a white washed look, and dark gives a tea stained/distressed look.  We bought our wax at JoAnn Fabrics on a 50% off sale!)

*Towel for buffing the wax.

*Screw driver to remove the seat.

*Staple gun/Staples for attaching the cushion.  If you don’t already have one, we use this one (and it’s cheaper than Walmart if you can wait for 2 day shipping).

*Some fabric/stuffing to cover the seat.  This is similar to what we used.  We got lucky during a random Walmart run and Morgan found a furry pillow for under $9!

*Scissors

The Process……..

*Several coats of chalk paint.  The awesome thing about chalk paint is you don’t have to sand the wood first!!!

*Once, you’ve reached the desired coverage with the chalk paint, it’s time for the wax.  We went with a clear wax.  Morgan didn’t want to white wash or distress her chair.  She wanted a cleaner look.  Paint on the wax just like you did the paint.  After it dries, you have to buff it with a rag.  The wax helps to seal in the chalk paint and provide a nice finish sheen to your project.

*Unscrew the seat.  Cut the back of the pillow and stretch the fabric around the seat base.  Use a staple gun to hold the fabric in place.  We got lucky with the stuffing already part of the pillow.  If you do this with a piece of fabric, you may want to add some batting for cushion.

*Screw the seat base back onto the chair and enjoy!

*We think it looks like she’s sitting on a troll head!  HA!  She loves it….and look, her room is halfway clean!  Right now, she’s being the queen of the room sitting in the middle of the floor….It will be her desk chair.

If you have any question, just ask!!!  I love a good DIY project.  It was so nice to be able to paint outside in the middle of January!  I wish that weather could have stuck around.  I think it’s supposed to make an appearance again next week.  YAY!
