Learning to Dance in the Rain | JFL Flag Football Cheerleading

JFL Cheer

Our local JFL added a cheerleading program to the younger “flag” ages this year.  They’ve had cheerleading for the older “tackle” kids for a while now.  I took on the role of “coordinator” for the flag group.  This large group was actually broken into 2 smaller groups (first/second grade and third/fourth).  Since I had a daughter in both divisions, it made sense that I would just take it on……  This worked great while we were practicing together.  Once games started, I was pulling double duty on game day, having to figure out schedules with my son’s lacrosse practice schedule, my husband’s work schedule, and juggle a tiny human.

Yay for a couple of moms that stepped up in the younger group!  They took on a more “coach” role and I stepped back and focused more on the older group of girls.  My youngest daughter ended up cheering with the older girls most of the time and we didn’t have to rush on game nights quite so much.  THANK YOU, MOMS!

When it rains it pours…so dance

You know the old saying, “when it rains it pours”?  Well, it did!!!  It started as a tiny sprinkle on JFL night at the high school football game.  All the JFL boys and cheerleaders got to walk the track, be introduced, and make a tunnel for the high school boys to run onto the field through prior to the game.

We started out walking and felt a few drops and by the time we got a quarter of the way around the track, it was more like a drizzle.  Some of the dad coaches were smarter than us girls….they must have checked the weather because they started opening umbrellas.  Ehhhh…..a little rain wasn’t going hurt us girls.  We were fine!  We had been given directions to stop at half track and wait for the time to be announced……well, it started actually raining…..and raining…..and POURING!!!!

You could see the girls look of shock…my look of shock (of course I chose to wear white…thankful for a loaner jacket from another mom)!  After the initial shock, the girls just made the most of it.  They were dancing and playing…having a blast!

We sure can learn a lot from kids!  Why stew over things we can’t control?  Sure those things can get to us.  We can become overwhelmed and irritated.  But if there is nothing you can do…..make the most of it.  We probably ended up having more fun and we certainly made some memories!

We ended our cheer season last night!  I’m so proud of these girls!  It was definitely a season of learning for all.  I think that’s how all first year programs go…..a little chaos, but a lot of fun!
