Okaw Valley Apple Orchard

Apples!!!!

It’s Fall!!!  That means back to school, cooler temps, and pumpkins APPLES!!  We love apples around this house.  I know, I’m supposed to be all pumpkin everything, but…..ehhhh…..I want apples!

We had a nice little visit to the, somewhat local, apple orchard last week.  My sweet girl’s second grade class took a field trip so we went on a tiny (because we weren’t all there) family adventure.  Creg was able to be off of work which made it extra special!Okaw Valley Apple Orchard Sullivan Illinois IL Field Trip apples

We had a great time learning about the apple orchard and how apples grow.  Each of us got to pick 2 Golden Delicious and 2 Red Delicious apples.  We went to the cider room where they take the rejects and make the apple cider.  They were actually making cider that day!!  I don’t think I’ve ever been that lucky, and I’ve had a lot of visits to the apple orchard (teaching and my own kid field trips).  We saw the bees that they bring in to help pollinate the orchard….no worries, they were in a case.  We also saw the big conveyor that sorts the apples in to first quality, second quality, and cider.

After seeing the different areas, the kiddos had a picnic lunch, had a treat from the orchard (cider and an apple donut…the adults had cider slush…YUMMO), and played on the playground.  The kiddos loaded the bus to head back to school and Creg, Dax, and I headed home with 2 dozen apple donuts!!!  Yes, 2 dozen!!  We had all the kiddos with us that weekend and a couple friends joining us for sleepovers!  They were gone in 24 hours!

When we went, there wasn’t much variety of apples to take home.  We are heading back this morning as a whole family (yeah, no school!).  I’m sure we will have more images to share.  I’m planning on bringing back a bushel box full of 2nds (hopefully Jonathon’s) to bake, freeze, and eat!  I’m guessing we will bring back some smaller bags of a few varieties to try and you can guarantee there will be apple donuts!!!  I’m going to put in a request that they make some gluten free apple donuts….It’s almost worth being in pain just to have a taste, but I won’t).

Stay tuned for an update from our trip today!  According to their Facebook page, they’ve started pruning peach trees!  They have Blushing Gold apples, a sweet tart apple that stores well, and Asian Pears ready now! They also still have Honeycrisp, Jonagold, Red & Yellow Delicious, & Jonathon apples on the shelves ready to take home!
